It is often asked, “What is the difference in WEI and WBS?” WEI attracts non-believers (who have little or no interest in the Bible) by offering English courses along with Bible study. English has become THE international language in today's world, and millions of people are studying English in order to get better jobs. The WEI Bible course is designed to create faith and to lead people to Christ. God has used WEI very effectively in communist and former communist countries and in Muslim countries where the Bible has been outlawed.
WBS, on the other hand, attracts people who are already interested in Bible study. WBS has been especially effective in Africa, Latin America, the Philippines, and other parts of the world.
It could be said that World English Institute is the daughter of WBS. In 1989, while on the Board of WBS in southern California, I was encouraged to develop the WEI materials and was given permission to borrow and adapt the WBS logo. Thus, WEI was developed under the auspices of WBS. Since that time, God has blessed WEI with students in 189 nations. All over the world, WEI has worked hand-in-hand with WBS in an effort to lead people to Christ through regular mail, e-mail, on-sight teaching and follow-up campaigns.
For example, our WEI training center in Tirana , Albania contains a bookcase full of WBS materials. When students complete the basic and advanced WEI courses, they are introduced to the WBS materials. We have found the combination of WEI and WBS studies to be very effective. The WEI and WBS Bible courses are quite different in nature, but reinforce each other.
At the Buduburam Refugee Camp outside Accra , Ghana , John Travis and others are using WBS and WEI materials to teach Liberian refugees. WBS provides John teaching materials. WEI has provided a bicycle for John so that he can tech more people, and sends him free Bibles and WEI teaching materials. John regularly sends pictures of WBS and WEI students who have been baptized into Christ.
In Nairobi , Kenya , Ted and Martha Ogle and their co-workers Peter Milimo, Andrew Onyango, and Nkurunziza Jean de la Paix, are using WBS, WEI, and NationsUniversity courses in their outreach ministry. Peter has been teaching WBS students for several years and is now teaching WEI students as well. Andrew has been working with NationsUniversity students, and is now excited about the possibilities of using WEI teaching materials as well. Nkurunziza Jean is now using WEI materials to teach more than forty Rwandan refugees in Nairobi and has reported two baptisms in the past two weeks. The Ogles and their co-workers have demonstrated that WBS and WEI can work together in partnership.
Generally speaking, God is using WBS to teach those with enough belief to be receptive and WEI to teach unbelievers who have an interest in English. Between the two evangelistic tools, God is teaching millions of people about Jesus Christ in nearly every nation on earth. To God be the praise, the honor and the glory forever.
“Those of us who are associated with World English Institute are honored to partner with WBS in world evangelism. It is a joy and a blessing to work with you hand-in-hand in an effort to glorify God and to spread the Good News about Christ throughout the earth.”
